First known discovery of Realgar is from the 1390's and can be found in a variety of colors from bright reds to yellows. The chemical composition is complex where the crystal formations are tabular and grainy. They can almost always be found with Orpiment and along side Quartz, Calcite, Galena and Barite. There is much history to these beauties as once the chemical compound was use to keep insects, vermin, and reptiles away, as a poison, and as paint pigments. Even today, within some cultures, there are ceremonies where they will drink it as an elixir and also anoint their bodies as a protective ritual to keep disease and evil away. Comprised of arsenic sulfide, one should always wash their hands as a precaution particularly if in an unpolished state or specimen form.
